Kung Fu Vs Yoga (1979) Review
Rating: 4 out 5
Director: Chan Chuen
Year: 1979
Plot:
Also known as Kung Fu Contre Yoga or Kung-Fu Versus Yoga, this
movie features an interesting premise with some excellent fight scenes. The
year of release was 1979 and “Kung Fu Vs. Yoga” features a similar plot to many
others. Two friends join a kung fu tournament and the winner will receive the
hand of a wealthy man in the village that they are in. When she is reluctant to
marry the winner, Tiger, there are 3 tasks that are set beforehand.
The tasks include getting a kung fu manual from a Shaolin
Monk, steal some jade from a brothel, and then steal a ruby that is found in
the hands of a Yoga master. If he can do these things, he will be able to go
through with the marriage.
Thoughts:
“Kung Fu Vs. Yoga” has a fair bit of comedy involved. This
is not a movie that is just about kung fu, although it centers around it
greatly. The movie features a good mix of different styles, and martial arts,
but there’s a great deal of comedy. The comedy involved makes the movie flow a
lot easier. This is not just fight after fight and thin storytelling, which is
always appreciated. There is plenty of fight, don’t get me wrong, but there is
comedic displays, timing, and overall goodness to warrant the in between.
Overall, “Kung Fu Vs. Yoga” is a good overall movie. It is
quick witted, fast moving, has some good comedy, and offers an incredible three-tiered
plot with on hell of an ender. The ending fight seen alone is going to get you
to rewatch this one, but let’s not discount the Blind-man fight scene, where
sound comes into play. I give “Kung Fu Vs. Yoga” a 4 out of 5.
